Turtle Beach XO Three

Image
These days, the vast majority of games – even on consoles – feature online multiplayer (competitive, co-operative or both), so the best gaming headsets are essential for the modern gamer. There are gaming headsets out there that cost as much as a new console, but are these premium cans really necessary for those who aren’t interested in one-upmanship? The Turtle Beach XO Three resists that concept – it’s a no-frills, wired gaming headset for the Xbox One X that will only set you back $69 (£49, AU$79), with Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales likely making it even cheaper. It’s a gaming headset meant for users that like playing games, but either aren’t swimming in cash or don’t harbor aspirations to become professional ESports players.  Design and build quality As gaming headsets go, the Turtle Beach XO Three is about as basic as they come. It uses 50mm drivers – bigger than you would expect at the price – and has a detachable, high-sensitivity microphone boom which can be be...

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro

Image
Convertible laptops have been refined down to a science since their awkward first steps onto the market a few years ago, and Samsung is perhaps most representative of this. The firm’s Notebook 9 Pro is a brilliant example of a meteoric improvement. Available in both 13.3 and 15-inch versions the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is a convertible 2-in-1 laptop , far removed from the traditional trappings of last generation. Rather, Samsung has decided to simplify things with a single configuration for both models, while focusing its energy on incorporating its S-Pen tech and Air Command software. This culminates in an economically-configured, svelte, all-metal Ultrabook packed with Samsung’s latest touchscreen and stylus technology. To be honest, we’re so impressed by the device’s aesthetic and power despite its price and specs that we’ve granted it our Editor’s Choice award. Price and availability Samsung has smartly specced and priced the Notebook 9 Pro to be affordable. The 15-inch version ...

Mac mini (2018)

Image
The new Mac Mini 2018 marks the return of a fan-favorite Apple computer, one that packs a lot of power into a compact, square aluminum shell. The specs and our brief hands-on time with this tiny, but mighty Mac proves is a sizable upgrade. It's five times faster than the previous Mac Mini, and while that computer maxed out at 16GB of RAM, the new Mac Mini goes all the way up to 64GB of RAM. Apple is also kicking up the speed and capacity on its onboard storage, going SSD-only up to 2TB. Sure, the design changes in four years time basically amounts to a color change. It now comes in space gray. The real overhaul is under the hood, with up to six cores on an 8th generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 chip. The Mac Mini is being positioned as a tool for creators, with Apple claiming that it's 30 times faster at encoding HEVC video. And, it has a bunch of ports on back – just one HDMI port, though. Thankfully, there are four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports to take their place. Price an...

New iPad Pro 12.9 (2018)

Image
Apple’s ‘other’ iPad is arguably its most impressive, with the larger screen and reduced bezel something that really stands out the second you clutch it to you. The fact this thing is mostly screen means you’re carrying an incredibly powerful and versatile tablet around with you at all times, and yet it doesn’t pack the heft of the previous two iterations of the ‘massive iPad Pro’. The specs, beyond the larger display and battery, are pretty much identical to the new iPad Pro 11, so if you want to read in depth about what’s going on with the new range, we suggest you check out our hands on: new iPad Pro 11 review . We’ll whizz through the main talking points here still, as well as giving you a rundown on how the larger size feels to use. New iPad Pro 11 price and release date Oh, the other thing that’s different about the new larger iPad Pro: the cost. It’s pretty hefty, as you can imagine, coming in at $999 to start - although given what you’re holding, it doesn’t actually feel ...

New iPad Pro 11

Image
There are some things that just seem to happen every year, as sure as the shifting tide: Apple will launch a new iPad, and it’ll come on a crest of a thousand hyperbole about how wonderful and gorgeous it really is. Well, in 2018 we have our wish of seeing and iPad being launched towards the end of the year - but it’s not the same, staid upgrade we’re used to seeing. MacBook Air (2018)

Image
The MacBook Air is back and it's ready for 2018 with a much slimmer design, higher-resolution Retina display, fingerprint sensor security, and better performance than the MacBook Air you knew and loved from almost a decade ago. This is poised to be Apple's best entry-level MacBook since it's cheaper than the 12-inch MacBook and sporting a larger 13.3-inch screen size. It has 17% less volume than the previous MacBook Air design and weighs just 2.75 pounds (1.25kg). It inherits some other features from today's beefier MacBook Pro 2018 : USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) ports and Touch ID. The individual function key row at the top remains, so there's no Touch Bar, but Apple has added a fingerprint sensor that's embedded into the keyboard within the same row of keys. You're going to have to get used to USB-C ports if you're upgrading to the MacBook Air 2018. Good news, there are two of them. Bad news, while we weren't expecting the four USB-C ports found on th...

Razer ManO'War

Image
With 7.1 surround sound and respectable bass, the Razer ManO’War is easily one of the best PC gaming headset s we’ve used to date. With virtual reality raising the bar for immersive gaming, this $169 (£169, AU$329) headset is exactly what you’ll want to enhance your experience – especially if you can score a great Black Friday or Cyber Monday deal. What's more, thanks to requiring only a single USB 3.0 port to work, this is one of the simplest 7.1 headsets you can hook up to your gaming PC or PS4 .  Design The Razer ManO’War is, well, it’s a large headset. From the round ear cups to the thick headband, everything about Razer’s latest headset does it big. The Razer ManO’War doesn’t look very comfortable at first glance. When you pick it up, the fram feels rigid and there isn’t any cushiony air gap built into the headband. Rather, there’s just a thin leather-ish band embossed with the Razer logo on one side and the smallest layer of padding on the other. Rather than going wit...

Asus VG248QE

We should all be fairly grateful that monitor and TV manufacturers are now turning their attention and marketing budgets towards 4K panels. It means we can all accept the latest attempt at making 3D a home experience was a total failure. But, since the 3D tide has receded, we've been left with some great panel technology for us faithful PC gamers - and that's been exemplified by the new Asus VG range of 144Hz screens. The higher refresh rate needed to achieve stereoscopic 3D has lead to some amazing advances in modern gaming monitors. We’re now getting more accurate color reproduction than yesteryear’s TN panels, with faster response times, which should be a godsend for anyone that likes to play ESports. But, it’s still the 144Hz refresh rate that gets us hyped about what the latest 3D movement has left behind. This means that good ol’ TN panels with their quick refresh rates are actually rather expensive. In fact, you can pick up a decent 27-inch 10-bit IPS display for abou...

Acer Chromebook R11

Image
Chromebooks aren’t like other laptops. Historically perceived as a direct route to the Google Chrome browser, their functionality was once limited to what you could accomplish on the web. The climate is a bit different now that most Chromebooks are compatible with Android apps via the Google Play Store. In that regard, the Acer Chromebook R11 is no different.  In fact, it’s superior to much of its competition as a result of a 360-degree hinge that most Chromebooks have yet to adopt. It doesn’t have the most powerful processor or the most RAM, but you can leave those facets to Windows laptops. The Acer Chromebook R11 doesn’t need the best specs to flourish, as Chrome OS doesn’t require them to experience smooth-as-butter operation. Pulling some inspiration from devices like the MacBook Air , the Acer Chromebook R11 is a stylish device that doesn’t go overboard. However, unlike Apple’s lineup, the Acer Chromebook R11 is reasonably priced at $329 (£221, AU$455), and should only get...
