Fairphone 4

Image
If you care about having an eco-friendly phone, the Fairphone 4 should be on your radar and, most likely, top of your wish-list. It’s the newest device from green tech company Fairphone, which specializes in devices made from recycled materials in ethical factories. Buying a Fairphone used to be a tricky calculation, though: you’d be getting a phone that wasn’t terrible for the environment (many modern mobiles are made in factories with environmental standards that are questionable at best, using rare-earth materials extracted using unsustainable and sometimes ethically dubious processes) but you’d be getting a device that wasn’t exactly competitive specs-wise. That’s not quite the case for the Fairphone 4, as the successor to the Fairphone 3 Plus from 2020 has a few upgrades in key areas to make it a more tempting buy. The phone has not one but two rear 48MP rear cameras, as well as the mid-range Snapdragon 750G chipset, which supports 5G connectivity, and a much bigger display. T...

Nokia G50

Image
HMD Global is an enduring stalwart of the budget phone market, but the Nokia G50 is its first phone in quite a while that you should really pay attention to. This is a phone for people who like streaming media on their phone on the go: it has a giant display, 5G connectivity, a long-lasting battery, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, all for an impressively low price. Moreover, it cuts corners in other areas to keep the price low: the slow processor and unimpressive cameras won’t affect how you stream content. Clearly, then, HMD Global has identified a particular niche of buyer and released a phone to appeal to those people. And we’d say it works: if you can relate to the above description, the Nokia G50 is a great phone for you that won’t break the bank. It’s not a device for everyone, for sure, but it ticks all the boxes it needs to. We spent some time with the Nokia G50, and ahead of a full review, here are our initial impressions. These are the best Nokia phones Nokia G50 release ...

Xiaomi Mi 11 review

Image
Two-minute review Never has Xiaomi’s rivalry with Samsung been so pronounced: the same year the latter company downgrades the specs of its flagship phones from previous generations (and the price accordingly), Xiaomi’s comes along and turns all those same specs up to (Mi) 11. At the Xiaomi Mi 11 launch the company announced, with an air of smugness, that it had recently become the third-largest smartphone seller in the world; Samsung still holds top spot by a country mile, far ahead of Apple too, but Xiaomi is rising fast. This third-place position didn't last long: a few months later, Xiaomi had overtaken Apple too, for the silver medal. Jump to... Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro review

Image
Two-minute review The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is the top model of the Mi 10T range, three new phones from the Chinese company, released in late 2020 to complement the Mi 10 line from the beginning of the year. Joined by the Xiaomi Mi 10T and Mi 10T Lite, the Mi 10T Pro sits just below the Xiaomi Mi 10 , and just above the ‘standard’ Mi 10T, in the company’s line-up of handsets. This phone is typical ‘Xiaomi’, in that it has a mid-range price but some advanced specs, namely a high-res main camera and a flagship processor, with corners cut in other areas to achieve the price. Xiaomi has put out many such phones via its different brands in 2020: there was the Poco F2 Pro , Black Shark 3 , and a few others. Jump to...
