HP OfficeJet 8012e/8010e all-in-one printer

Image
The latest additions to HP’s range of affordable office all-in-one printers come with a free trial of HP+ which adds functionality and discounted consumables sent in the mail when you sign up. It’s a useful service that gives this budget model an edge in the competitive home office or small business category. We’ll call it the HP OfficeJet 8012e in this review, but our American friends will know it as the HP OfficeJet 8010e. At around £113 (US$155, AU$210) the HP OfficeJet 8012e comes with a generous set of features including a 35-sheet ADF (automatic document feeder), self-healing Wi-Fi, a tilting touchscreen interface and the ability to print on any kind of paper up to A4 in size. It’s not especially fast at printing and it lacks a multipurpose paper tray, but HP recommends it for use in a shared workgroup of up to five people and suggests a hefty maximum monthly duty cycle of 20,000 pages. It’s worth pointing out though that you only get enough ink in the stingy starter cartridg...

Canon MAXIFY GX6050 3-in-1 color inkjet printer

Image
Canon’s latest super tank printers don’t come cheap, but they do come with all of the features an SMB (small to medium sized business) could ask for and a whole lot of ink.  The Canon MAXIFY GX6050 ships with four ink bottles in the box — enough for 6,000 mono and 14,000 colour pages. That really puts the old cartridge-based inkjets to shame and also beats most laser printers in terms of consumables cost per page. The generous amount of ink also explains the high price tag.  At around £460 (about US$636, AU$859) it’s expensive for an A4 inkjet printer , but the cost is further justified by high build quality and luxury features like the touchscreen interface, a 100-sheet ADF (automatic document feed) and dual scanning. It can handle a heavy load with a quoted maximum monthly duty cycle of 45,000 pages and print on a very wide variety of media, including glossy photo paper.  Also check out our complete list of the best inkjet printers (Image credit: Future) ...

Brother MFC-J4540DW 4-in-1 colour inkjet printer

Image
The Brother MFC-J4540DW is the flagship model in a range of six new mini business inkjet printers designed to support the move to permanent hybrid working . Like many companies, Brother UK is itself moving to a hybrid model with staff expected to function as effectively at home as they are in the office. With this in mind, the new printers come with all the office features you can think of squeezed into affordable home-friendly designs.  As the premium model, the Brother MFC-J4540DW has a few extras including a touchscreen interface and an NFC module built in. The so called All In Box or XL version of this printer also includes enough ink in its XL cartridges for up to three years of printing. Be aware that this is the regular version and its standard cartridges will yield only 3,000 mono and 1,500 colour pages, but that’s still a heck of a lot for a cartridge-based inkjet. Kyocera ECOSYS P2040dw mono laser printer

Image
The Kyocera ECOSYS P2040dw is built for speed and high productivity with a blistering print rate of 40ppm (pages per minute) and a maximum duty cycle of 50,000 pages per month. The print resolution is also higher than most mono laser printers at 1200dpi and although the main paper tray is only 250 sheets of A4 deep, you can expand the paper capacity to 850 sheets by adding two more cassette units. Costing around £249 (US$348, AU$475) it might still seem expensive for a print-only desktop device with no touchscreen, but you should also take into account Kyocera’s long-life components and efficiency enhancing features. The ECOSYS branded products are built to last and come with a standard two-year guarantee plus a three-year guarantee for the drum and developer. They also have an eco mode to improve the yield you get from the toner cartridge making your total cost of ownership over time more competitive.  It comes with enough toner in the starter cartridge for 3,600 pages and Wi...
