Intel Core i9-11900K

Two-minute review We wish the Intel Core i9-11900K was a larger upgrade. Just like the other processors in Intel’s 11th generation, it’s only received a small refresh to hold over those hoping for a big update. That’s not to say it doesn’t pack a punch because it does. You’ll be hard pressed to push it beyond its limits. But, it’s not going to get anyone excited or keep Intel at the top, particularly with all the great competition from AMD. While processors like the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X seem to break new ground, the Intel Core i9-11900K essentially uses 10nm Ice Lake architecture but in a 14nm process, so you end up with just an 8-core, 16-thread design. Though it’s managed to uphold Intel’s dominance when it comes to single-core performance, the competition outperforms it when it comes to multi-core performance.  The only users that can really make the most of this CPU, especially considering its price, are gamers. Now that the 12th-generation Alder Lake chips are out , this CP...

Two-minute review It’s disappointing that the Intel Core i9-11900K isn’t a bigger update. It, along with the rest of the 11th-gen CPUs, seem like minor refreshes to hold us over until something special comes along. That’s not to say that it isn’t a powerful desktop chip. It is and it can handle just about anything you want it to. With that said, it’s not a product that’s going to keep Intel relevant in an increasingly competitive market, especially with such impressive processors like the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X available.  It’s no wonder considering that the Intel Core i9-11900K takes 10nm Ice Lake architecture and backports it to a 14nm process, for a more limited 8-core, 16-thread design. While it does have exceptional single-core performance, it just can’t keep up with the competition when multi-core processes enter the picture. That means this CPU is in a strange position in the market, as it’s not worth the price for anyone except gamers. Particularly, with Intel’s 12th-genera...

Two-minute review The Intel Core i9-11900K and the rest of the 11th-generation lineup feel more like stopgap chips to tide us over until the next big update than something to really be excited about. It’s undoubtedly a powerful desktop processor, one that can easily power through pretty much any workload you throw at it. At the same time, it isn’t exactly the chip to help Intel hold on to its slowly slipping relevance in the desktop market. Not in the shadow of heavyweight processors such as the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X .  This isn’t exactly surprising. Intel backported the 10nm Ice Lake architecture to a 14nm process for the Intel Core i9-11900K, which is why it only has an 8-core, 16-thread design. This means that while it does have an extremely strong single-core performance, it falls so far behind in the multi-core department. That puts it in a really odd place in the CPU market, and makes it hardly worth the sticker price for anyone who uses their computer for more than just play...
