A touch-screen case, Dolby Atmos and a posture test: I spent a month with Cleer's open earbuds that have it all (except top-tier audio)

Image
Cleer Arc 5: Two-minute review Almost every one of the best open earbuds I’ve tested, has been designed for sports users. They let you hear your surroundings at the gym, remain aware when running in a busy area, and keep alert when cycling on a road. I don’t think Cleer missed this memo – the brand’s intentionally going for something completely different. The Cleer Arc 5 are open earbuds designed not for sports, but for the rest of us. I was skeptical when I first saw them, but they’ve surprised me — in both good and bad ways. The presence of Dolby Atmos and THX Spatial Audio means these are suited for watching a TV show or movie on your commute, and their support for a range of better Bluetooth codecs, including LDAC and aptX Adaptive, shows Cleer is aiming for audiophile-quality earbuds here. Those are some exceptional features for a form factor that naturally competes with loads of extraneous...

These new Anker earbuds are hands-down the best for calling I've ever used, and the sound and fit are excellent — just make sure you buy the right pair

Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro: Two-minute review Anker's Soundcore sub-brand may not have a reputation for releasing the best earbuds that everyone raves about, but they tend to be solid pieces of kit. We gave the Soundcore Liberty 5 (yes, take care, because that's not these — and there's also a Pro Max to swerve in favor of these) a 3.5-star score, and that tends to be par for the course. Until now, that is. With the Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro, there's been a change: it really feels like the brand is coming into its own, and it knows what buyers really want. These are incredibly feature-stuffed headphones, with an app that'll boggle your mind given how many tools it offers. And they're all useful too: the ANC is very good, the listening test is handy and the array of array of little extras is impressive. Particularly special is the quiet calling feature, so people you're spea...

I've spent 25 hours with this 8K-polling games controller: it's been great for Arc Raiders, not so great for my PC

Image
GameSir G7 Pro 8K: one-minute review GameSir has an odd naming scheme for its game controllers – isn't the G8 Galileo already out? – but numbers aside, the selling point of the GameSir G7 Pro 8K is in the name. A spin on our highly-rated GameSir G7 Pro , this new PC controller offers 8K polling, alongside all the things we loved about the original controller: it's lightweight and comfy to use, modular thanks to a removable face plate, and connects in a variety of ways. For those not in the know, 8K polling means your controller speaks to your chosen device 8,000 times per minute, not 1,000 times like most other controllers, and it allows for more precise and reflexive movement. This kind of kit is designed for esports players, or people who really don't like to lose. The idea of 8K polling tech is quite divisive: most people seem to view it as a hard-to-notice change, and not worth t...

Fairphone 4

Image
If you care about having an eco-friendly phone, the Fairphone 4 should be on your radar and, most likely, top of your wish-list. It’s the newest device from green tech company Fairphone, which specializes in devices made from recycled materials in ethical factories. Buying a Fairphone used to be a tricky calculation, though: you’d be getting a phone that wasn’t terrible for the environment (many modern mobiles are made in factories with environmental standards that are questionable at best, using rare-earth materials extracted using unsustainable and sometimes ethically dubious processes) but you’d be getting a device that wasn’t exactly competitive specs-wise. That’s not quite the case for the Fairphone 4, as the successor to the Fairphone 3 Plus from 2020 has a few upgrades in key areas to make it a more tempting buy. The phone has not one but two rear 48MP rear cameras, as well as the mid-range Snapdragon 750G chipset, which supports 5G connectivity, and a much bigger display. T...

Nokia G50

Image
HMD Global is an enduring stalwart of the budget phone market, but the Nokia G50 is its first phone in quite a while that you should really pay attention to. This is a phone for people who like streaming media on their phone on the go: it has a giant display, 5G connectivity, a long-lasting battery, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, all for an impressively low price. Moreover, it cuts corners in other areas to keep the price low: the slow processor and unimpressive cameras won’t affect how you stream content. Clearly, then, HMD Global has identified a particular niche of buyer and released a phone to appeal to those people. And we’d say it works: if you can relate to the above description, the Nokia G50 is a great phone for you that won’t break the bank. It’s not a device for everyone, for sure, but it ticks all the boxes it needs to. We spent some time with the Nokia G50, and ahead of a full review, here are our initial impressions. These are the best Nokia phones Nokia G50 release ...

Xiaomi Mi 11 review

Image
Two-minute review Never has Xiaomi’s rivalry with Samsung been so pronounced: the same year the latter company downgrades the specs of its flagship phones from previous generations (and the price accordingly), Xiaomi’s comes along and turns all those same specs up to (Mi) 11. At the Xiaomi Mi 11 launch the company announced, with an air of smugness, that it had recently become the third-largest smartphone seller in the world; Samsung still holds top spot by a country mile, far ahead of Apple too, but Xiaomi is rising fast. This third-place position didn't last long: a few months later, Xiaomi had overtaken Apple too, for the silver medal. Jump to...
