Google Home

Image
Amazon opened the floodgates last year by bringing its Echo devices to India and it was a matter of time before Google followed. The company introduced the Home devices in India recently, starting with the Google Home and Home Mini smart speakers. Just like Amazon, Google is also testing the waters here, keeping the most expensive devices out of reach for the moment. The Google Home is meant to get more Indians to use the Google Assistant, in turn improving the company's ability to improve its AI capabilities in the country. And like the Echo, the Home has its flaws right now. Together, the two companies want to force smart speakers into Indian homes, though their products differ very slightly for now. So, the obvious question now is which smart speaker should make it through your doors. Using the Google Home The Google Home is a pretty powerful device overseas but like many other things in technology, it's considerably weaker in India. On one hand, Google has made inroads...

Amazon Echo Spot

Image
Amazon wants your home to feel like the deck on the USS Enterprise, the fictional starship from Star Trek. The company's Echo devices , along with the Google Home and Apple's Homepod are the first step Silicon Valley has taken, towards ambient computing. It all points towards a future where computers are all around you and work without touching screens or pressing buttons. But before we get there, we need screens. And that's why Amazon made the Echo Show and Echo Spot, two Alexa-powered smart speakers with attached screens. The Spot is Amazon's fourth Echo device in India and it's no coincidence that the company started selling it here weeks after Google announced the Home and Home Mini . The screen makes the Spot undeniably different from the Home and possibly better. Using the Echo Spot The Echo Spot can do everything the Echo speakers can and adds a visual element to some of the skills. You could call people using the Echo, you can make video calls using ...

AGM X2

Image
**Update : A new model, the AGM X2 SE has surfaced on Gearbest. It sports exactly the same specification as the AGM X2 but with a much lower price at just £320.39 as of 27 April 2018** We’ve had a fair number of rugged smartphones in for review over the past 18 months, but few have got us buzzing as the AGM X2 did. The follow-up to the X1 was announced in the second half of 2017, but getting hold of one has been tricky to say the least. AGM is one of the forerunners in the crowded rugged mobile market and doesn’t manufacture anything else. Will the innovations of the X2 be enough to fend off competition from the likes of the Doogee S60 or the Vernee Active? Read on to find out. Design The AGM X2 is big. At 168.5 x 83.4 x 14mm with a weight of 250g, it is one of the biggest ruggedized smartphones we’ve tested to date, and that’s despite having a display that’s the same size as most of its competitors (5.5-inch). The argument for having a poor screen-to-body ratio is that in ret...

Moto G6 review

Image
Motorola’s G series has gone from strength to strength, which is a real achievement considering the first phone in the line, from 2013, set a new standard for affordable phones, and racked up sales to match. The company's aim with the Moto G line is to bring those features you’d normally expect on high-end phones to a cheaper handset. It’s never going to be the same experience as buying a genuinely high-end phone, but it does allow you to get a taste of those top-end features without spending a fortune. To that end, Motorola has brought to the Moto G6 the 18:9 display ratio we’ve seen on several top-end phones in the past 18 months or so from the Samsung Galaxy S8 to the LG G6 , Huawei P20 to the Asus Zenfone 5 , to an affordable handset. It’s not the first company to do this – Alcatel released a whole series of phones (headlined by the Alcatel 5 ) earlier this year that even included a phone under £100 with an 18:9 display – but it’s the first time this feature has come to th...

Nokia 6 (2018) review

Image
It’s been a minute since Nokia came bounding back onto the global smartphone stage with its HMD-backed, impressively inexpensive Androids. Now we’re getting into the second editions, which is where we’ll see how much attention Nokia paid to the first round reviews, and get an idea of how their phones will stack up in the long term. In this case, the original Nokia 6 got a strong 4-star review with some caveats - notably the slow charging and average hardware. When the 2018 revamp was announced, there was a lot of excitement among Android purists about the updated design, upgraded chipset and addition of fast charging. The price has had a little bump too. Before we get into whether it’s worth the extra spend, it’s worth mentioning that there’s some confusion around the name of this phone. The company itself calls it ‘the new Nokia 6’ in some places, and ‘Nokia 6.1’ in others, including on the box. We’ll be using both in this review, but it’s useful to know because the Nokia 6 (2017...

Sky Q

Image
Update: You can now stream Spotify through Sky Q, letting you play music and podcasts through your living room speakers very easily. Sky Q sees the leading broadcaster in Britain enter the streaming age. Focussing on the highest quality visuals deliverable over the airwaves and across your web connection, it pushes multi-room streaming to the fore – and may well be the best TV platform a subscription can currently buy.  Whether you're in your living room watching your main television, or in your bedroom with a smartphone or iPad, you get the same Sky experience.  This isn't the first time Sky has tried the multi-room approach. Previously its multi-room package spread Sky channels throughout the house with a network of installed set-top boxes. More recently, its Sky Go app appeared on Xbox and PlayStation, meaning that you could have multi-room, through the web, without having to get a Sky engineer in. Then there was the introduction of its contract-free streaming option No...
