Checkmyfile

Image
Signing up for a typical UK-based ID theft protection service will give you access to your credit report, but only from one credit agency – usually Experian, Equifax or Callcredit. These are usually very similar, but there are likely to be differences. Checkmyfile takes this to the next level, combining your credit report details from Experian, Equifax, Callcredit and Crediva to give you a much more rounded picture of what's held about you online. What you don't get with Checkmyfile are any form of automated alerts when your credit reports change. That's perhaps understandable – deciding when to raise alerts is going to be much more complicated when you're looking at four reports rather than one – but it does mean that if you want to use Checkmyfile to detect identity theft, you'll have to do it yourself. Sign up for Checkmyfile here This isn't necessarily a fatal problem. Yes, using Checkmyfile for ID theft protection requires more work than competing se...

Huawei P20 Pro

Image
Huawei has been teasing us with the camera prowess of the P20 Pro for a few weeks now. Add to that a brilliant design, a disappearing notch and speedy performance, the P20 Pro is certainly looking to shake the phone market. It was announced alongside the Huawei P20 , which might not make it to the Middle East, but features higher specs that include a three camera set up on the back. We're sure that is set to be a big part of the marketing for the new handset. Following the launch event. we've managed to get some time to play with the device and here are our initial impressions. Huawei P20 Pro release date and price The Huawei P20 Pro will be on sale in the UAE and Saudi towards the end of April. We'll find more details on the release date and the pricing in the Middle East in the next couple of weeks and will update this article accordingly. In Europe, the P20 Pro is priced at 799 Euros, however, Huawei generally prices its handsets more favorably in the Middle East. W...

iStorage datAshur Pro 64GB (IS-FL-DA3-256-64)

Image
With GDPR only a few months away, securing data (and avoiding multi-million pound fines) has never been so high on the agenda of businesses both large and small. There are plenty of storage solutions on the market that promise to ring-fence your content using good old physical PIN numbers, and the datAshur Pro (which costs £129 – around $180 – for the 64GB model ) is one of them. The difference here is that the numeric keypad is on the drive, which eliminates the threat of traditional keyloggers. Note that the drive is also available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models. Design This USB 3.0 drive is IP57-rated which means that it is dust protected and can be immersed in up to 1m of water – that's providing it's housed in its rugged aluminum sleeve. You can laser etch text or a logo on the device for an additional fee. The drive has a rechargeable battery that allows the user to enter a PIN (between 7 and 15 digits long, and you have 10 seconds to do that) before connecting t...

Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset

Image
Logitech is rounding out its G Pro lineup of gaming peripherals by adding the Logitech G Pro gaming headset to the already available mechanical keyboard and mouse under the G Pro moniker. The result is a subtle design that has everything a gamer needs without all the flair a gamer doesn’t. For $89 (about £65, AU$115), you get a well-built headset that focuses on comfort and sound quality over all else. It really feels like every dollar goes into offering a better experience where it counts. At the price, the Logitech G Pro runs up against competitors like the decent but unexceptional Steelseries Arctis 3 at $79 (£89, AU$129), the impressive Corsair Void Pro RGB wireless headset at $99 (£109.99, AU$159), and the dazzling Creative Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition at $99 (£89, AU$169). The competition is steep, but the Logitech G Pro does a decent job of keeping up, and it does it without shouting to the world that you’re wearing a gaming headset when you leave your games behind....

iMac Pro

Image
As the name suggests, the iMac Pro is a powerful, sleek and stylish all-in-one computer with the familiar form factor of Apple’s iMac line, but with the features, power and, of course, price that is entirely aimed at professional users. When Apple revealed the iMac Pro at WWDC 2017 , it boasted the iMac Pro as ‘the most powerful Mac ever made,’ and it is clear that the Cupertino behemoth has succeeded. This is an incredibly powerful machine that’s been built for professional use. And, until we know what Apple is doing with the iMac 2018 , it may remain the most powerful Mac for some time to come. It’s not just about power for power’s sake, however – this is a carefully built machine whose powerful components can speed up the workflow for professionals.. Sure, the price tag is steep, but if it can help reduce the time you work on projects, the time you save that can be put into working with clients or taking on further projects could be invaluable.  Price and availability Desp...

WD My Passport SSD

Image
External drives aren’t exactly the sexiest storage devices around but thanks to solid-state memory in the form of flash hardware, engineers are now able to cut the size of storage products right down – while at the same time being a bit more innovative when it comes to form factors. The My Passport SSD is WD’s first external SSD and has been designed in such a way that it is small enough to slip in your jeans’ front pocket, while being just big enough not to get lost amongst said pocket’s contents. Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB sizes, it covers the more popular capacities and sits neatly in WD’s portfolio with the ruggedised SanDisk devices and the more business-focused G-Technology GDrive products, both of which are significantly more expensive. Design We reviewed the 256GB model which comes with a USB Type-C (USB 3.1 Type 2) connector, meaning that it can hit 10Gbps if connected to a compatible device. It is small, but not quite as streamlined as some of its competitors. At...

New iPad 2018

Image
The new iPad for 2018 is the latest tablet from Apple, and it's good news for both the student and the consumer. It’s a budget-conscious slate that’s designed to help Apple make further inroads into the lucrative education market, and as such it loses some of the key features of the top-end devices in an effort to keep the price down and make it affordable for schools and parents. The new iPad (2018) starts at $329 (£319, AU$469), although it's $30 cheaper for schools (we're not sure about the discount for the UK or Australia yet). While it maintains the same price in the US and Australia, currency fluctuations mean that in the UK it's actually £20 cheaper than 2017's iPad. If you want cellular connectivity, that'll cost you $459 (£449, AU$669). This is the same shape and chassis that's being used in 2018's new iPad, and it's got 32GB of storage, but there are some key upgrades. The Apple Pencil could be a game changer The main feature of the ...

Huawei P20

Image
Huawei’s big phone upgrade for 2018 is the jump to three cameras on the rear of the P20 Pro, but for some reason that upgrade isn’t coming to the standard P20 model. The upgrades for the P20 over last year's Huawei P10 include a glass back, new colors, an AI-toting processor and some other under-the-hood spec upgrades, but everything here is a little limited considering the company decided to call this the P20 and not the P11. So do our initial impressions mean we think it’s worth buying the P20 when the P20 Pro looks to be such a significant upgrade? We’ve been hands-on with the P20 to find out what's improved. Huawei P20 release date and price  The Huawei P20 has just been officially unveiled alongside the P20 Pro, but an exact date for when it’ll land on shelves has yet to be announced. Huawei may provide some information about the release at the end of its launch event, and if that’s the case we’ll be sure to update this article. The same goes for price, and we’ll upd...
